Santa Clara, CA (PRWEB) April 13, 2012

Friday, April 13, 2012 - The MariaDB Project today announced the availability of MariaDB 5.5 as a stable, generally available (GA) release. This much awaited release, based on the MySQL® 5.5 codebase, includes the biggest number of changes and additions to MariaDB, including all the optimizer enhancements up to MariaDB 5.3.

MariaDB 5.5 still remains backward compatible with the popular MySQL® product.

“MariaDB reaching a stable state on version 5.5 is a significant milestone for the product. This release combines the great features of MariaDB with MySQL 5.5. We have seen a huge increase in adoption since we launched the first version of MariaDB 5.5 and reaching a production-ready 5.5 will drive adoption to new levels”, says Monty Widenius, the creator of MySQL and MariaDB.

A few highlights of MariaDB 5.5 include extensions that upstream-MySQL® considers commercial-only features. These include a Pluggable Authentication Module (PAM) plugin and a high-performance threadpool. Some features in MariaDB 5.5 were developed for a very large social networking site, and these include group commit in the binary log, a non-blocking client library and the ability to terminate long-running SELECT statements. MariaDB also ships with Geographic Information System features compliant with the OpenGIS standard.

“We see an increasing number of customers interested in using feature-rich MariaDB” said Ulf Sandberg, CEO, SkySQL Ab. “The ones not already using MariaDB usually state they are waiting for a 5.5 release, so we expect a great uptake of MariaDB 5.5 within our growing customer base.”

The MariaDB project is also happy to announce that the upcoming MariaDB Galera Cluster has reached its first milestone. MariaDB and Galera developers joined forces to create the MariaDB Galera Cluster. The source has now been made available. During the coming months, packages for this new cluster version of MariaDB will be released.

Seppo Jaakola, CEO for Codership and main developer of Galera - “By having MariaDB’s great engineering team working together with our engineers, we will make Galera even better and benefit from the current and new MariaDB features!”

The stable release of MariaDB 5.5.23 is available for download at http://www.mariadb.org/ immediately. This MariaDB release is supported by a release partner, SkySQL Ab.
