Data Backup in Windows 10 to Prevent Virus with MiniTool ShadowMaker

Sometimes, you may wonder “do I have a virus”, there is a scenario you may not like, but it can happen to you every day. Imagine you're working on an important project, and all of a sudden, there are annoying pop-ups showing up on your computer, or it takes too long to load files or applications, and now you need to check if your computer is infected with malware, but you need to back up your data before that.

Backup protects against file loss that can occur as a result of a failure, infection or mistake. I advise backup data in Windows 10 as any upexpected error may occurs, such as a virus.

On March 31, 2019, International Backup Day was celebrated, i.e. backups, which - as is well known - some do and others will start (for example, as soon as they get an unpleasant surprise in the form of losing valuable files).

On this occasion, I wrote this article on how to make a copy of data in Windows 10.

What is backup?

In short: www.minitool.com/lib/backup.html, i.e. backup (or backup) is a copy of files that can be recovered after losing or damaging the original ones (as a result of computer failure, malware infection or accidental deletion).

Why back up?

It is worth creating backups and doing it systematically, because a failure can occur at any time, and the loss of valuable company files or even photos from holidays (not to mention a master's thesis) can be painful.

This topic should definitely not be underestimated, because even reliable hardware may crash, and the best protected computer - get infected.

Backing up files stored on your home computer is definitely a good idea. In turn, creating it on a company computer is something that you absolutely should not give up.

How to back up data?

Let's get to the point, i.e. the answer to the question of how to backup.

Method one: the Windows 10 System Tool

The basic way to create a backup is to use the utility that is built into Windows 10. Prepare a hard disk, flash drive or other storage media with the capacity you need, then plug it in and then:

  • press Windows + I or enable Settings by clicking Start> Settings,
  • select the "Update and security"section and then, using the menu on the left, click "Backup" ,
  • under the heading "Backup from file history", click "Add Disk" and select the media on which you want to save the backup.

Once the disk has been added, you can click "More options" . A panel will be displayed, which will allow you to change the frequency of making backup copies (the default is "Every hour", but it can even be "every 10 minutes" or - in the opposite direction - every 24 hours). Then you can decide how long the backup versions of the files should be stored (it can be as good as 1 month or 2 years). In the same window, you can select folders to be backed up and those to be excluded from it.

To limit the amount of space used for backup, you can limit the frequency of backups, storage time and the number of directories. Especially in home conditions it is not necessary to update the entire disk copy every few dozen minutes.

Backup made using the File History tool allows you to recover all files saved on the computer disk with Windows 10. Documents, photos or any other content can be restored literally in a moment.

How to backup? Method two: Thisrd-party Software

If you want more backup options, you can use a third-party program. There are many applications - both paid and free, intended for backup.

Which backup program should you choose? Currently, MiniTool ShadowMaker is most valued. Describing how to create backups in them, however, does not make much sense, because the built-in wizards actually do everything for the user and simply show him the available options.

Where to store and how to restore data from a backup?

Finally, let's answer two important questions. The first concerns where to store backups. Well, the best, i.e. the surest option, is to use a USB flash drive or an external hard drive for this purpose. You can also use this internal (but this only makes sense if you have a computer with more than one HDD or SSD). It is also important that the media has sufficiently large capacity (i.e. that it will fit copies of all current and previous files).

Physical storage is one option, but you can also store your backup in the cloud. It's a safe solution, but it can also be expensive. However, if you have such a disk, it is worth using it.

And when it comes to how to restore data from a backup, it obviously depends on which option you used. In the case of the system tool, go to the "More options" section mentioned earlier, and there at the bottom you will find "Restore files from the current backup".

How to Know If Your Computer Has a Virus: Signs of Infection

Not all viruses are similar, and some affect computer systems differently than others. Thus, how to tell if your computer has a virus?

In most cases, there are several visible warning signs to keep an eye on, like sluggish performance, odd pop-up dialog boxes, unexpected crashes, disabled antivirus tools, a different browser homepage, or a slow internet connection.

Sign 1: Your Computer Is Slowing Down

Sign 2: Annoying Ads Are Displayed

Sign 3: Crashes

Sign 4: Pop-up Messages

Sign 5: Internet Traffic Increases

Sign 6: Your Browser Homepage Changed Without Your Knowledge

Sign 7: Unusual Messages Show Unexpectedly

If your computer has one of these signs, you need to pay attention to your computer and take action quickly. If your computer got a virus, check out the methods on how to solve it.
