Sony Xperia E1 Dual: 512MB RAM seriously?

Sony had just announced on January 14th of the imminent arrival of the Sony Xperia E1 Dual. Although it won’t be setting the world on fire.

The phone is measured at 118 x 62.4 x 12 mm (4.65 x 2.46 x 0.47 in) and weighs just 122 g (4.30 oz) which is very lightweight.

You will get a 4-inch TFT capacitive touchscreen displaying 480 x 800 pixels or ~233 ppi pixel density which is acceptable in this range. It comes with scratch-resistant glass for added protection.

Xperia E1 Dual uses the Qualcomm MSM8210 Snapdragon 200 chipset which is already few generations behind, a Dual-core 1.2 GHz Cortex-A7 processor, Adreno 302 GPU plus 512MB RAM. Yes you saw that one correctly, just 512MB RAM. It’s been a while since we go below 1GB but still in 2014, it’s a wonder why Sony will release a smartphone with just 512MB RAM.

Even the camera is a dated 3.2 Megapixel camera with 2048x1536 pixels and features such as geo-tagging, face and smile detection, HDR, image stabilization, panorama. No secondary camera is available.

However as for the OS, it runs on Android Jelly Bean 4.3 but don’t think there will be an upgrade to KitKat 4.4 unless it’s a flagship phone from Sony, and E1 Dual is certainly no flagship.

It comes with 4GB of internal storage which is considered to be the lowest in the market at the moment. Lucky there’s a microSD slot which supports expansion of up to 32GB.

As for battery, it is powered by a Li-Ion 1750 mAh battery which if you consider the specs for this battery size, it should give you a good day or two of battery life depending on the usage.

It is really hard to imagine that Sony would come out with this phone especially with its measly 512MB RAM. My experience with older phones with less than 1GB RAM has been frustrating. Not sure if Jelly Bean OS might help a lot but since it’s the year 2014, certainly 1GB RAM is the bare minimum nowadays especially for smartphones.

As for the rest of the specs, it sounds decent enough but the camera certainly disappoints though. The only noteworthy is the dual sim function but then, there are so many choices out there which offers more value for your money.

Although there’s no official pricing yet on the Sony Xperia E1 Dual, but it better be dirt cheap otherwise it will be a flop. It will be out soon and it comes in black, purple and white.
