M2M growth strong as Australian organisations prepare for Internet of things

Machine-to-machine (M2M) mobile subscriptions grow strongly as businesses exploit remote monitoring and management applications

The Australian M2M mobile services market will grow from 1.3 million connections in 2013 to more than 3 million in 2017 fueled by adoption of a wide range of remote field applications, according to new research from Telsyte.

Telsyte expects the value of carrier services revenue from the M2M mobile services market to grow at 14% CAGR from 2013 until 2017. And the number of organisations using M2M technologies will similarly increase throughout the forecast period.

The Telsyte Australian M2M Market Study 2014 shows the largely untapped M2M opportunity is mainly driven by vertical industries rather than size of the business or location.

M2M is also a key part of the “Internet of things” trend sweeping the IT industry, particularly for devices in remote locations.

Telsyte Senior Analyst Alvin Lee says industries such as healthcare, engineering and the services sectors are expected to be the fastest adopters of M2M solutions during the next 12 to 24 months.

“M2M is now proving itself valuable to many organisations looking to reduce on-site operations and optimise business processes,” Lee says.

“As the M2M technology infrastructure is built into more devices, and more solutions become available, customers will have a lot less of a barrier to M2M and the telcos are well positioned to take advantage of this trend.”

M2M applications use the mobile network to connect any manageable device and its applications are varied, including security and control systems, vehicles, remote displays and even food vending machines.

With more than 60 per cent of Australian business and government organisations either using, or looking, at M2M solutions there is growing interest in applying the technology.

“M2M applications such as telemetry, mobile device management and POS systems are key growth areas,” Lee says, adding demand for cloud services and big data applications will also enhance the growth of M2M applications.
